Spirit of Durham Award- Joan Nielsen

Joan Nielsen (aka The Queen Bee) is very deserving of the Spirit of Durham award. Joan has worked at Durham Enterprises longer than anyone, save Mark Durham. She is easily the most consistent person in the office. Which also means that she is the most dependable. Joan will always get anything asked of her done, and any special requests will usually be put ahead of her own priorities.

Joan is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that the company is taken care of. A few summers ago when the entire company was at a tradeshow and the warehouse was in dire need of help, she singlehandedly (almost) unloaded an entire container of product with a pallet jack. A feat that hasn’t been accomplished by the most skilled of warehouse staff. It wasn’t easy, and the circumstances were less than favorable, but Joan knew that it had to be done to keep things running. That is one of many examples showing Joan’s willingness to do anything.

If you ever need anything proofed, Joan is the ultimate proofer. She is the best in the building, and from the rumors I have heard, the best ever…west of Bangerter Highway. Joan will find mistakes, important details that have been left out,…anything. She is good. It probably stems from her ability to keep all of Customer Service, Order Entry, Invoicing, Customer Request, etc, etc, etc….straight. She is easily one of the most organized minds in the office, and it shows.

Joan is the face of our company. When a customer or partner walks through the door, or calls on the phone, Joan is the first person to greet them. We are so fortunate to have such a caring, capable person taking care of our customers. She is always asked for at our tradeshows…clearly leaving a positive impression on those that work with her. More importantly however, Joan is an important reason why our Durham Family is happy. Birthdays are never forgotten because of Joan. Holidays never pass without celebration because of Joan. And Staff Meetings would reflect poor attendance without Joan. :)

Thank you for all that you do to make this a great place to work Joan!

Spirit of Durham Award- Mike Thomson

Mike Thomson is a deserving recipient of the Spirit of Durham Award.

As the number of Durham Enterprises (DE) customers grows larger and more complex, Mike helps to ensure that the customer receives their order as promised and delivered on time. For example, during the month of October, Mike spent hours arranging details with factories, QC teams, freight forwarders etc.... so that the recent Walgreens shipment wouldn't even touch the DE warehouse, but would be handled at a 3PL site. Mike also played an instrumental role in the recent Target order, that included relabeling hundreds and hundreds of clips.

His skills in the Supply Chain have been crucial, especially as the urgency of orders have increased and the demand for our product has grown. Earlier this year he was moved from the Imaginisce Supply Chain over to Gimme Clips Supply Chain. While he was overseeing the purchasing of the Imaginisce products, he implemented some key processes that helped regulate ordering and product line analysis. These processes have helped to systematize and improve efficiency.

Mike is also a tremendous thinker, analyzing data, and then communicating his recommendations to the team. If you ask any one of his co-workers they will tell you he's a fantastic chart/diagram creator and his spreadsheets are incredible!

Mike's humor and desire to be a team player have made him a company favorite. Anytime there is a stressful deadline looming ahead, Mike will be sure to bring laughter into the room.

We're so grateful to have Mike Thomson on our team. Congratulations Mike!
